Travel Photography

Well, I finally got around to putting up my photography back in early 2006. With the flood of client work, this sort of non-profit work gets put on the backburner until I do some major updates to my website. While Daily Venture, my travel photography website, will always be a work in progress, it is mostly complete. If I haven't yet posted my latest adventure it means I've been too busy getting your project done, see?

Photos are available in standard desktop wallpaper and background sizes. All photographic originals are free for personal and commercial usage. All I ask is that you link back to DailyVenture.com when possible.

Daily Venture: Free Wallpapers!

I've been kicking around the idea to develop a website for my photography for several years, but it's a very daunting task. Undoubtedly many of you have taken to compiling all of your photos, labeling them and putting them into a system where you can retrieve and view them easily. If you have negatives then you have to get them all scanned, color-corrected and cleaned up. Usually every single photo needs some kinda special treatment to get it right, sometimes even laborious editing to remove an inconvenient object in the shot.

Thousands of Photos...

It took a few months to review all photos then carefully scan and fix them all. Since my intention was to create a website where all the photos could be downloaded freely and shared, I wanted to host several different high-resolution versions of each photo so that people could use them as wallpapers or in their own projects. Once all the negatives were scanned I needed to create a truckload of pages where they could be viewed easily. And of course every page required that I write something about the photos because I had allocated a column to text and it would look weird and imbalanced if one side was stuffed with photos and there was a few lines of copy and a huge blank space. Creating the pages took another couple months. What an ordeal!

Once the site was up it sat for a few months while I recovered. At that point there were 70+ individual HTML pages — a bit cumbersome to update when global edits needed to be made. It became increasingly obvious that a database should to be built and a set of dynamic pages written to deliver up everything. So I set about entering all the photo info, journal entries and related catalog information into a MySQL database, then writing a complex batch of PHP scripts to do it to it. This became another laborious effort requiring months of work amidst regular client projects and all the other stuff that hits the fan of life. As always, Daily Venture was developed from scratch.
